Line broadening and narrowing effects,udents describe a lack of teaching about empathy and the neglect of psychosocial aspects of the patient’s situation. They talk about the strong biomedical bias in their teaching and its negative effect of empathy. Other barriers such as negative role models, assessment and feedback are explored in relation to the student–patient relationship.

Dimitris Drikakis,William Riderhey describe an increasing on focus on the patient, distress at examples of a lack of empathy with patients and a concern that they remain empathetic doctors in the future. They also describe the ways in which in some clinical situations they hide expression of their empathy in the interests of appearing ‘efficient’.

The main factor is their contact with patients, supported by an experienced clinician. They describe aspects of teaching and support which they found helpful. The role and nature of inspirational positive role models are discussed.
