The Fermat Equation and Transcendence Theory,irst work in the field in which n is treated as a variable rather than as a fixed exponent. In my talk today I should 1ike to describe a little of the background to this development and I should 1ike to mention also some very recent related work in the context of function fields.

On the Conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer for Elliptic Curves with Complex Multiplication,innerton-Dyer have conjectured that r(E) is equal to the rank of the finitely generated group E(F) of points over F; they have also given a conjectural formula for c(E) in terms of certain arithmetic invariants of the curve (2.10).

We consider the transcendence, algebraic independence and linear independence of numbers related to the gamma and beta functions, as well as some associated quantitative results.
