Pathways to Literacy: Its Nature and the Extent of Its Provision in Nineteenth Century Ireland, Protestant belonging to Societies, and since the 1780s attempts were made by the government to introduce a formal system of education. Most efforts failed until 1831 when Stanley’s letter introduced what was meant to be the panacea for Ireland’s sectarian ills. This too, foundered ultimately with regard to the sectarian issue.
