On Singularities, Local Optima, and Formation of Stiffeners in Optimal Design of Platesderived by variational methods. However, the optimum plates obtained in this way have fairly smooth thickness variation, and, compared with corresponding plate structures equipped with stiffeners or ribs, at least some of them must be considered as local optima.

On Conservatively Loaded Funicular Arches and their Optimal Designe systems may be obtained by the application of classical variational procedures. Many examples of this type have appeared in the literature, a review of which up to the year 1968 is given by Sheu and Prager [1]. Beginnings are being made toward optimization of non-conservative elastic systems.
