His father Babu Ganga Kanta Mukhopadhyay being in the state judicial service had different places of posting, and as a consequence Syamadas had to study in different institutions at different times.

His father Keshab Chandra Chaki was a landlord and mother Kunjakamini Debi a pious and kind-hearted housewife. M. C. Chaki had his school education in East Bengal.
