描述This book has developed from an earlier monograph, ‘Renal Function‘ (1962; London, Edward Arnold). It retains the general purpose of that book in relating the composition of the blood to the volume and com- position of the urine of animals, including the new data of the intervening 20 years. As indicated by its title, this new book also has the particular purpose of studying the urine of animals in a normal environment and eating food usual to the species. Renal physiology illustrates a dilemma which arises also in other fields. Advanced technology, harnessed by accumulated experimental skill, now allows detailed investigation of basal processes. Micropuncture experiments have greatly advanced our understanding of the processes of glomerular fil- tration and tubular reabsorption and have contribut- ed to the wider discussion of the physicochemical nature of the movement of water and ions across cell surfaces. But experiments at microscopic or cell- ular level demand experimental conditions in which the systems are abstracted from their natural en- vironment, either as isolated perfused preparations or with the anaesthetised animal merely providing support for a tissue left in situ.

Excretion of Sodiumre fed unsalted food and the mean rate of excretion of Na with the dogs at rest 16 hours after their meal was 2.2 μraol/min, range 0.5–8.5. Such low rates are necessary to the animal living on food not supplemented with NaCl.

Acute Experiments on Drinking by Dogs which determine drinking are different from those which determine the intake of food. The purpose of this chapter is to describe acute experiments, particularly on dogs, which show specific mechanisms causing drinking; these are mechanisms which can be presumed to determine the water intake under normal living conditions.

Intake and Excretion of Potassium% of the total body K. In the dog, Abbrecht (196 9) found that .K exchanged with body K of 47 ± 7 (n = 7) mmol K per kg body weight. As in man daily intake and excretion of K is usually about 4% of the total body K.

Acute Experiments on the Volume of the Urine the urine always in the presence of adequate ADH and changes in the release of ADH are not involved; the urine is always concentrated and the volume remains small. Later in this chapter, in describing water diuresis in normal dogs, the urine in the absence of ADH becomes of low concentration and high volume.

Renal Nerves as an Agent Acting on the Kidneysey but not in the renal parenchyma, which means that the strands in the pedicle are a mixture of pre- and post-ganglionic fibres. In its gross anatomy the sympathetic renal nerve supply is typical of the sympathetic system and is closely mixed with the supply to abdominal viscera, especially gut and suprarenal glands.
