Excretion of Potassium Summerill (1976c) found K excretion increased to about 35 μmol/min. After running, O’Connor (unpublished) has found K excretion increased to about 35 μmol/min. For the purposes of this chapter the ‘normal’ range of K excretion in dogs is therefore up to 50 μmol/min.

Intake of Sulphur and Excretion of Sulphatethe extracellular volume of 0.23 litres/kg body weight in both dog and man (p. 300). Walser, Seldin and Grollman (1953) recorded the progressive fall of radiosulphate in arterial blood following its intravenous injection and concluded that uniform distribution between plasma and interstitial fluid was reached within 30 min.

Excretion of SulphateIn mammals sulphur is ingested as organic compounds containing S, particularly the S containing amino acids, which are oxidised in the body to produce inorganic SO., which is excreted in the urine. Acute experiments investigating the excretion of inorganic SO. have been reviewed by Mudge, Berndt and Valtin (1973).

Glomerular Filtration Rate seen as a major factor determining increased excretion of urea, SO., PO. and possibly K. In discussing Na excretion (Chapter 8) the main argument revolves around the probable role of a small increase in glomerular filtration as a mechanism determining increased excretion of Na. Glomerular filtration rate is central to renal function.
