描述The post World War II era witnessed a tremendous growth in the research carried out in neutron-induced reactions and especially in neutron capture y-ray studies. This growth was stimulated by the availability of neutron sources, such as reactors and accelerators, and by the development of high resolution y-ray and conversion electron detectors. Today the combination of high flux reactors and precise instrumentation has produced spectral data of exceptional quality, as the pages of these proceedings illustrate. The world-wide community of the practioners of the art of cap- ture y-ray spectroscopy has met three times in the last decade: the first international symposium on this subject was held at Studsvik, Sweden in 1969, and the second at Petten, The Netherlands in 1974. A smaller meeting, of mostly u. S. and some European parti- cipation, was held at Argonne National Laboratory in 1966. A perusal of the proceedings of these meetings shows the striking ad- vances in this now mature field of physics over the last dozen years. Few-Quasiparticle Components of Nuclear States at High Excitation Energiesxperimentally. The fragmentation of the deep hole state . . in the S. isotopes is discussed. The results of calculating the s-, p- and d-wave neutron strength functions and the giant resonances of higher multipolarity in deformed nuclei are presented.

Doorway Structures in the Radiative Capture of Fast Neutrons cross sections are reproduced very satisfactorily. The calculation also predicts the existence of doorway states embedded on the giant dipole and contributing significantly to the cross section. These doorway states are indeed consistent with the existence of rapid fluctuations observed in recent (n, γ.) and (n, γ.) measurements.

Exotic Atoms and Nuclear Structureadrupole and hexadecapole moments, but also dynamical E2 transitions probabilities and deformation parameters..The process of pion capture in nuclei is still poorly understood. Information can be obtained from the observation of γ-ray transitions both on- and off-line and also from particle spectra, both single and in coincidence.

Nonstatistical Effects in Neutron Capture, A Review of Recent Experimentss of the potential capture theory of Lane and Lynn. .Xe, .Te, and .Sm are presented as representative examples. In addition, the resonance capture data are reviewed for valence and doorway state effects. Ml transitions observed in thermal data are discussed in terms of a semi-direct process.
