Analyzing the Utility Problem,This research project was motivated largely by my observation that explanation-based learning is not guaranteed to improve problem solving performance. In this chapter, I discuss why this is so, and briefly review some theoretical and experimental results that bear on this issue.

Proofs, Explanations, and Correctness: Putting It All Together,This chapter presents a formal, non-procedural description of explanation-based learning. My aim is to provide a theoretical model that complements the experimental work described in the previous chapters. The model will characterize the term “explanation” precisely, enabling us to prove that the EBS algorithm is correct with respect to the model.
