描述Bacterial CpG-DNA sequences not only serve for genetic information but act as "danger" signal to alert immune cells such as macrophages and dendritic cells. CpG-DNA directly causes activation of these members of the innate immune system yielding in up-regulation of co-stimulatory molecules and pro-inflammatory cytokines. As such they act as "natural" adjuvants to promote protective Th1 polarized T cell immune responses. This book is the first comprehensive review of the data emerging in this field.

Consequences of Bacterial CpG DNA-Driven Activation of Antigen-Presenting Cells, (CWCs), such as lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and lipoteichoic acids. CD14 recognises carbohydrate constituents commonly expressed on pathogens (. et al. 1993; . et al. 1994; . and . 1995; . et al. 1996) and signals “danger” to myeloid-lineage cells (. 1994).

Immunostimulatory-Sequence DNA is an Effective Mucosal Adjuvant,ole in protecting us from our environment, there is a great deal of interest in developing strategies for stimulating protective mucosal immune responses. Unfortunately, traditional vaccination methods are not effective and, at present, there is no simple, safe, and generally applicable approach for the induction of mucosal immune responses.

Effects of CpG DNA on Th1/Th2 Balance in Asthma,ata are presented that demonstrate that CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) are capable of modulating the Th2-mediated inflammatory response in a murine model of asthma. These studies suggest that CpG DNA may be useful in the prevention and treatment of asthma.
