描述This book explores the lives, experiences and the formation of higher educational aspirations among marginalised migrant youth in South Africa. Using a case study based in Johannesburg, the author illuminates their voices in order to demonstrate the reality faced by these young people in the context of migration to the Global South. Within the complex landscape of global and African migration, this book draws on detailed narratives to understand the conditions under which aspirations for higher education are – or are not – developed. In doing so, the author highlights the value of understanding individual lives, experiences and opportunities from a human development point of view, capturing the multidimensional disadvantages experienced by migrants in a balanced, intersectional manner. Balancing empirical data with theoretical analysis, this volume tells a rich, nuanced story about marginalised migrant youth – an essential work for understanding the conditions necessary for such youthto live valuable lives in both local and international contexts. Contextualising Youth Migration and Education,ance of migration within the Global South and how this is equally important as migration from the Global South to the Global North. The adoption of the human development informed capabilities approach as an analytical framework provides a clear picture on why such a study cannot be separated from development discourses.

Migrant Stories: A Picture of Youth Migration in Southern Africa,hy development programmes in this city should take into account current and future migrants, as this is clearly a destination of choice. Using the migrant stories, Mkwananzi further provides an understanding of the environment in which HE aspirations may be formed among migrant youth living in a context of disadvantage.

An Intersectional Analysis of Capabilities, Conversion Factors and Aspirations,dered aspect in aspirations formation, which marks the disparate values and aspirations between young men and women. Understanding Migrants Valued Capabilities and Functionings,lso discusses the value placed on education by classifying this into intrinsic and instrumental values. The different degrees of value placed on education by migrant men and women draw attention to gendered influences in higher educational aspirations formation.
