描述High-performance computing and networking (HPCN) is driven by several initiatives in Europe, the United States, and Japan. In Europe several groups encouraged the Commission of the European Communities to start an HPCN programme. This two-volume work presents the proceedings of HPCN Europe 1994. .Volume 1 .includes sections on: keynote talks, HPCN and visualization in industry, algorithms for engineering applications, electrical computer-aided engineering, computational fluid dynamics, computational chemistry, materials science, weather simulations, environmental applications and climate, high-energy physics and astrophysics, neuroscience and neural networks, and database applications.

Three-dimensional simulation of semiconductor devices,ction devices is discussed. To get an acceptable CPU time, vectorization and parallelization is used in the numerical solution methods. For a demonstration of some possibilities of the simulation program, we have simulated an HBT and an IPG-FET.

An embedded solution using high performance computing for cost effective on-line real-time monitorion of the project is given. Within the description, the development approach, functional analysis, product tree, physical architecture and the demonstrator to be built are all commented. Finally, the benefits of the project, including economic and social impacts are shown.
