Indeed, calculations of many-body effects have only been performed for either a uniform electron gas or for metals having an almost spherical Fermi surface such as Na. Practically nothing is known at the present time about many-body effects in metals having a complicated electron structure.

The latter is invoked to interpret an anomalous modulation most visible in diodes with their junction field in the [100] direction. The origin of the higher optical dielectric constant in the junction, which is mainly responsible for mode confinement, is not as yet understood.
