The Confucian Thread,ar words and, inevitably, Chinese and U.S. education methods, I had barely registered the fact that besides being an English professor he was also the deputy director of the Confucius Cultural Institute. I’d thought that Mao Zedong had eliminated Confucianism from modern China, so the ancient scholar was not high in my list of interests.

Pathology of the Cerebello-Pontine Angle,and a briefing about the school’s aims. Xuzhou, where major rail lines intersect, lies 400 miles south of Beijing, and I was the first Western teacher to visit schools there. It was March 1991. The lessons I saw were similar to what I see today.
