Fiber Metabolism and Colonic Water,ls are not necessarily applicable to man (Phillips, 1988). In addition, differences in ileal effluent that are dependent on diet and biliary secretions and bacterial metabolism in the colon result in feces that can vary both qualitatively and quantitatively (Eastwood .., 1984).

Goblet cells in the mucosa produce copious amounts of glycoprotein mucin, and the constant sloughing of cells from the mucosa of the small and large intestine releases tissue mucopolysaccharides into the lumen (Lennarz, 1980). Mucopolysaccharides are also found in meat.
