Use of Natural Materials from Northern Russia for the Isolation of Radioactive Wastes and Spent NuclThe application of natural materials to the isolation of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel is being assessed, together with possible isolation technologies. The operational requirements for such materials are identified and a proposal for an inter-regional ecological and technological project is discussed.

Deep-Well Injection of Liquid Radioactive Waste in Russia: Present SituationAt present there are 3 facilities (polygons) for the deep-well injection of liquid radioactive waste in Russia, all of which were constructed in the mid-60’s. These facilities are operating successfully, and activities have started in preparation for decommissioning.

Multibarrier Effectiveness as the Expedient Measure for Selecting the Appropriate Stabilization and possible risks of contamination. The development of rational and acceptable options for radioactive waste disposal requires a clear understanding of radiation protection objectives and their application in planning, regulation and licensing.

Deep-Well Injection of Radioactive Waste in Russiaed into sandy or other formations with high porosity, which are isolated by water-tight layers. This technique has also been used elsewhere for toxic liquid waste and residues from mining operations. Deep-well injection of radioactive waste is not currently used in any of the European Commission (EC) countries.
