描述How coherent is the claim that Catholic education is bothdistinctive and inclusive? This question, so crucial, both for theadequate articulation of a .raison d‘être. for Catholicschools all over the world and also for the promotion of their healthyfunctioning, has not hitherto been addressed critically. Here itreceives penetrating analysis and constructive resolution in acomprehensive treatment that integrates theological, philosophical andeducational perspectives. The argument draws on wide-rangingscholarship, offering new insights into the relevance for Catholiceducation of thinkers whose work has been relatively neglected. Theadvance in understanding of how distinctiveness relates toinclusiveness is underpinned by the author‘s lengthy experience ofteaching and leadership in Catholic schools; it is further informed byhis extended and continuing dialogue with Catholic educators at alllevels and in many different countries.

Distinctiveness and Inclusiveness: Incompatibility or Creative Tension?,means that I omit treatment of those contexts other than schooling which also provide opportunities for educating Catholics in their faith. Among these might be included sermons, liturgy, missions, catechesis, sodalities, sacramental participation, religious literature, pilgrimages, scripture study

Distinctive Worldview,urriculum has a religious dimension, and, secondly, that all the disciplines, although autonomous, have a part to play in promoting the integral development of the whole person.
