Toward a Systematic Study of the Dark Side of Student Motivation: Antecedents and Consequences of Ttions of controlling teaching, is reviewed herein. In addition, we provide an overview of previous studies on antecedents of controlling teaching and sketch a number of research directions for future research. The chapter closes with a set of practical recommendations for teachers.

Autonomy-Supportive Teaching: What It Is, How to Do It,language, and display patience. For each act of instruction, I define what it is, articulate when it is most needed during instruction, explain why it is educationally important, and provide examples and recommendations of how to put it into practice.
