Sugars too small to form the five-membered ring (C2, C3) oligomerize under the conditions to form C4–C6 sugars, which are sequestered as silicates. These reactions provide a model for the prebiotic synthesis of sugars.

The results demonstrate that the immobilized CALB on silica had both a high catalytic activity and also good thermal stability when compared to free CALB.
