Their significance lies in their answer to the second question: what is the nature, the essence of things that are.

,Can we define Being?: 249D–251A, being (.) which we should express by drawing a circle, inside which we place the things which are (.), i.e. we literally encircle them. We meet the same term again later in the dialogue in precisely the same sense: In the section on dialectic we shall hear of “forms encircled from without by one form” (253 D7 f., p. 53 below).
