Background Due to Penning Traps,Penning traps are a very useful tool in many areas of physics, most notably in atomic physics. They are often used for precision measurements of ion properties, but also for technical applications like vacuum gauges and sputtering technology. However, for KATRIN, Penning traps are an unwelcome guest, most of the time.
