Atoms in a Magnetic Field: Quantum Mechanical Treatment,The ordinary Zeeman effect is a beautiful example of the fact that even with classical physics, one can obtain results similar to those of strict quantum theory. In order to set our earlier results on a firm basis, however, we shall now go through the strict quantum theoretical treatment.

Atoms in an Electric Field,In 1913, . observed a splitting of the lines of the Balmer series of hydrogen (8.2) in an electric field. He was studying the light emission of H atoms in the field of a condenser (Figs. 15.1, 2). Since then, frequency shifts in optical spectra in the presence of eletric fields have been generally called the Stark effect.
