High energy neutral beam heating may be preferable, or heating by relativistic electron beams. but beam penetration and control may pose severe problems. End losses in current designs are unacceptably high and need to be reduced by end-plugs, either in the form of multiple magnetic mirrors, or possibly by solid frozen DT.
