GlycolysisGlycolysis, literally the splitting of sugars, occurs in the cytosol of nearly every different cell type of almost all organisms, from bacteria to higher animals. The enzymes are soluble rather than being bound to membranes. It has two main roles:

The Tricarboxylic Acid CycleLike all organic compounds, glucose will burn in air to produce carbon dioxide and heat. This oxidation process has been harnessed by living organisms not to produce heat, but to trap chemical energy in the form of ATP which can be used for a variety of cellular functions.
