影響因子How do small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) adoptenvironmental innovations? Do they have the necessary internalcompetence? Is any support offered by external parties (i.e. networkinvolvement)? What are the policy implications? This book is based onextensive fieldwork, conducted in four traditional industrial sectors:offset printing, electroplating, textile finishing, and industrialpainting. The work was carried out in Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands,Portugal and the UK. Twenty company-based case studies were analyzedand a telephone survey was conducted among 527 companies. As a result,the Innovation Triangle came to be formulated, which is presentedhere, defining and combining the determinants of SME innovativeness.The Innovation Triangle distinguishes three major determinants ofinnovativeness: business competence, environmental orientation, andnetwork involvement. The Innovation Triangle allows one to diagnosecurrent environmental and innovation policies, indicating which policymeasures might be effective in increasing the adoption ofenvironmentally friendly technologies, allowing environmentalobjectives to be achieved.

Employing Fancy Widgets and Containersn those cases where the focal companies were first movers or early adopters (frontier technology and best practice), the adoption required a capacity to change strategy, to develop new competences and network relations.

Handling Activity Lifecycle EventsChapter 2 has generated a number of insights which have been used to structure the protocol for the case studies. Moreover, the analysis of the case studies could be based on them. The following propositions can be defined which reflect these insights:
