描述This book explores the experiences of working-class women undergraduates at three universities in the North of England. The author examines the women’s identities, choices and emotions in relation to higher education; and how they reframe their constrained university choices to maximise their chances of academic success. Deciding to Go to University,versity based on academic capabilities or to fulfil their career aspirations through teacher training. For Horizon-Expanders, Incremental-Hybrids and Returners, the discernment phase of internal conversation when considering if university was a ‘worthwhile’ project was more extensive and protracted, than for the Mobility-Maintainers.

Stepping Stones, emphasised ‘dovetailing’, with their overriding commitment to family. For the Returners, there was a sense of confidence in moving to a new social-class position based on a change in occupation, whilst remaining in their existing familial contexts.
