the Gulf Coast geosyncline. This major structure started to form during the Lower Cretaceous, and it has remained a site of active deposition ever since. During the Neogene and Quaternary southern Louisiana has experienced tilting towards the geosynclinal trough. Actual uplift in the north has accompanied actual subsidence in the south.
