Cyclic AMP and Vascular Smooth Muscle Functionth muscle and is a part of the regulatory mechanism of arterial tone and contractility. The present data add further information about the role of the cyclic AMP system in the control of vascular smooth muscle function.

Slow Oscillations of Transmembrane Na und K Fluxes in Vascular Smooth MuscleVascular smooth muscle possesses all of the properties of a rhythmic system (3). Spontaneous, rhythmic contractions of blood vessels occur, parallel to spikes and oscillations of the membrane potential. These phenomena must be based on corresponding ionic movements which have not yet been observed.

Role of Cyclic AMP and Ca++ in Mechanical and Metabolic Events of Smooth MuscleIn the following investigation we have found that an influence on the c-AMP metabolism is of significance both during relaxation and contraction of bovine mesenteric artery. All tests were done with isometrically contracted muscle. Cyclic AMP was analyzed according to KAKIUCHI and RALL (Mol. Pharmacol. 4, 367–378 (1968)).
