It is impossible to envision the course of future events, and a volume which deals with instrumentation is especially prone to become outdated. Nevertheless, any valid approach to a scientific question should be applicable indefinitely.

E. van Zyl BSc, BA(Hons), HEDon following electrical stimulation of the squid giant synapse, and Baker and Knight (1978) have demonstrated the dependence of catecholamine release from adrenal medullary cells on the free Ca.-concentration. The site of action of Ca. or the mechanisms which control membrane fusion during excytosis are not known, however.

These methods are now in routine use in a wide range of biological applications (Rinehart 1982; Busch and Glish 1984).
