In contrast, estuaries, which constitute the interface betweenthe fresh water and marine ecosystems, are biogeochemically andphysically very dynamic. Strong gradients in physical and chemicalvariables such as temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen,nutrients, amount and composition of particulates result from themixing of fresh water and saline end members. These gradients provokeincreased biogeochemical processes, generally resulting in ageochemical filter (the area of high turbidity, showing enhancedadsorption-desorption processes) and a biological filter (thearea of high plankton activity showing, besides a high uptake ofnutrients, a high accumulation of trace metals).
