Stereoselective Electrocyclizations and Sigmatropic Shifts of Strained Rings: ,!, which cause this stereoselectivity are found to influence the ground-state geometries of cyclobutenes and other substituted small-ring compounds. The study of the electronic effects which promote twisting in a predictable fashion is a new aspect of stereoelectronics which we have named (only partly in jest) “torquoelectronics”!

Synthesis of Functionalized Episulfides,tenes, the rearrangement of sulfur ylide formed by an intramolecular carbene reaction, the thionation of methylenecyclopropanones, and the alkenylidene carbene addition with thioketones. Some properties of the unique episulfides thus obtained are also discussed.

The Cyclopropyl Group in Studies of Enzyme-Catalysed Reactions,es to enzymes and the intrinsic reactivity of substituted cyclopropylcarbinyl radicals. When both factors are taken into account, penetrating insights into the mechanisms of enzyme-catalysed reactions can be obtained by studies of the products of enzyme-catalysed reactions on cyclopropane- containing substrates.

Generation and Interception of 1-Oxa-2, 3-Cyclohexadiene and 1,2,4-Cyclohexatriene, 6-.-bromo-6-.-fluorobicyclo[3.1.0]hex-2-ene (.) and its benzo derivative ., respectively. On treatment of these compounds with methyllithium in the presence of sty- rene, the interception products . and . of 1, 2, 4-cyclo- hexatriene (.) and its benzoderivative .,respectively, are formed in good yields.

Cyclobutane-Cyclopentane Interconversion of Coordinated Adducts of Cycloheptatriene and Tetracyanoed not interfere with the reaction. This, together with the kinetic data and the small observed solvent effect k(CD.OD)/k(CDCl.) = 6.8, support a mechanism in which isomerization proceeds via a single step pericyclic [2,2]-sigmahaptotropic rearrangement.

Quest for Higher Prismanes,ished through novel strategies. Efforts directed towards the conversion of these precursors to [6]-prismane are described. Some experiments enroute to [7]-prismane and [8]-prismane have been explored.
