Introduction,Single-mode fibers are dielectric waveguides for optical waves. Although dielectric waveguides have a history that goes back as far as 1910 [Hondros and Debye 1910], they have never been used for long distance communication at microwave frequencies because of the losses in the dielectric materials available.

Electromagnetic Fields,A light beam propagating freely in air and the fundamental mode guided by a single-mode fiber are electromagnetic waves, i.e. electric and magnetic fields which vary in time and depend on the location of the point of observation. In order to understand single-mode fibers, it is necessary to know how to describe these electromagnetic fields.

The Fundamental Fiber Mode,In Sects. 2.2, 3, waveguiding by a single-mode fiber was explained in physical terms. In this chapter, the wave beam guided by the fiber will be described in more detail.

Launching of Modes,In this chapter, we will discuss methods for launching guided modes in dielectric optical waveguides. We are, of course, mainly interested in exciting the LP. mode, but e.g. for measuring purposes it is also important to know how to excite a LP. mode.

Signal Transmission Through Single-Mode Fibers,The main application of single-mode fibers is in signal transmission. The electrical signal to be transmitted is modulated onto an optical carrier wave which is guided by the fiber in the form of the LP. mode. Different modulation techniques can be used: intensity, amplitude, phase, or frequency-modulation.

Joints Between Fibers,mal to the fiber axis (Sect. 12.1.1) and then butt-joined, either permanently to form a splice (Sect. 12.2.4), or detachably to form a connector (Sect. 12.2.5). If two identical fibers are jointed with no geometrical misalignment, the two fibers behave like a single continuous fiber and there is no reason for power loss.

Components for Single-Mode Fibers,ese devices, such optical components as light source to fiber couplers, splices, connectors, directional couplers, attenuators, multiplexers, isolators, switches, etc. are essential to realize practical transmission systems or are required for measuring purposes.
