描述It is difficult for today‘s students of archaeology to imaginean era when chronometric dating methods were unavailable. However,even a casual perusal of the large body of literature that aroseduring the first half of the twentieth century reveals a battery ofclever methods used to determine the relative ages of archaeologicalphenomena, often with considerable precision. .Stratigraphic excavation is perhaps the best known of the variousrelative-dating methods used by prehistorians. Although there areseveral techniques of using artifacts from superposed strata tomeasure time, these are rarely if ever differentiated. Rather, commonpractice is to categorize them under the heading `stratigraphicexcavation‘. This text distinguishes among the several techniques andargues that stratigraphic excavation tends to result in discontinuousmeasures of time - a point little appreciated by modernarchaeologists. .Although not as well known as stratigraphic excavation, two othermethods of relative dating have figured important in Americanistarchaeology: seriation and the use of index fossils. The latter (likestratigraphic excavation) measures time discontinuously, while theformer - in various guises
