Science Needs for Tank Waste Remediationthe integration of science can be done by creating multi-disciplinary “technology fusion” teams that will deliver timely solutions to both the short and long term environmental problems faced by the DOE. The Tank Focus Area (TFA) supports the EMSP and has worked hard to establish technical and programmatic linkages between the two programs.

Vadose Zone Characterization for High-Level Waste Tank Closures after removal of the bulk of the material. The design of a system to characterize any waste which may have entered the vadose zone surrounding the underground storage tanks through leakage is the topic of this manuscript.

Laser Ablation — Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry: Analysis of Hanford High-Level Waste ted with an identical test system determined experimental operating parameters which has provided quantitative assessment of sludge elemental/isotopic constituents. The deployed system configuration will be described. Data will be presented which illustrates present qualitative and quantitative capabilities of the system.

Overview of U.S. Radioactive Tank Problemhnical challenge. First, the total volume of the waste is ~341,500 m. and contains ~734.2 MCi. This waste needs to be removed from the tanks because many of the tanks have leaked radioactive waste to the soil, and others are suspected of leaking, posing a potential near- and probably long-term threat to people and the environment.

Solids Control in Sludge Pretreatmentoal of pretreatment is to obtain a low-volume high-activity waste stream and a high-volume low-activity waste stream. Also, some waste constituents such as chromium and phosphate can be included in glass formulations only at very low concentrations; therefore, it is desirable to remove them from high-level waste streams.
