描述About ten years after the publication of the Second Edition (1973), it became apparent that it was time for an up-date of this book. This was especially true in this case, since the subject matter has traditionally dealt mainly with the structure, properties, and technology of the various elastomers used in industry, and these are bound to undergo significant changes over the period of a decade. In revising the contents of this volume, it was thought best to keep the orig- inal format. Hence the first five chapters discuss the same general subject matter as before. The chapters dealing with natural rubber and the synthetic elastomers are up-dated, and an entirely new chapter has been added on the thermoplastic elastomers, which have, of course, grown tremendously in importance. Another innovation is the addition of a new chapter, "Miscellaneous Elastomers," to take care of "old" elastomers, e.g., polysulfides, which have decreased some- what in importance, as well as to introduce some of the newly-developed syn- thetic rubbers which have not yet reached high production levels. Ethylene-Propylene Rubber,tion began only in 1963, EPM/EPDM rubber is now the fastest growing elastomer (ca. 6% per year), and there are presently five manufacturers in the United States, four in Europe, and three in Japan. The reasons for its rapid growth are its excellent properties, especially in an ozone environment, and its ability to be highly extended.

Silicone Rubber,licone rubber sales have done very well in contrast to most organic rubbers. This growth has taken place not only in the United States, but especially in Japan and Western Europe. The United States now accounts for 50% of the total sales of 100 million pounds.....

Polyurethane Elastomers,Polyurethanes are a discovery and development of O. Bayer and his chemists in Germany, first in the Main Scientific Laboratory of I. G. Farbenindustrie beginning about 1937, and later, Farbenfabriken Bayer. Since then they have been studied, developed, and improved worldwide in many laboratories and have become a resounding commercial success.

Miscellaneous Elastomers,Polysulfide elastomers were first developed in the early 1920’s, when J. C. Patrick discovered the condensation reaction of ethylene dichloride and sodium tetrasulfide. The first production of polysulfide was in 1929 to 1930 by Thiokol Corporation, who manufactured the product Thiokol Type A.
