Flood in the GBM Delta,ot work as expected. It is now understood that total freedom from flood is neither possible nor desirable. The strategy must switch over to preparedness-driven approach from ongoing relief-centric flood management.

,Rivers of the Tarai–Doors and Barind Tract,s like the Kulik, the Karatoya, the Atrayee, the Tangon and the Punarbhava flow southwards through the Barind and have been decayed. The subsidence along the line followed the Jamuna, and compensatory upheaval of the Barind tract have had impacted the recent changes in river courses of this region.

,The Jamuna–Meghna System,ollowed by the Jamuna) acted as the cardinal force governing the changes. The absorption of sediment load carried by the old Brahmaputra in the Sylhet basin for a longer geological period may be attributed to the disproportionate growth of the delta towards the Bay of Bengal.

The Sundarban,diment dispersal during high tide was impaired and the channels were choked. The coastline of the GBM delta has been changing fast; while the sea encroaching inland along Indian coast, the shape of the Meghna estuary in Bangladesh has changed due to accretion.

,The Western Tributaries to the Bhagirathi–Hugli River,f these rivers are plains and prone to recurrent floods. Even after embanking and building of reservoirs across many rivers, the floods have not been regulated. The Damodar which was earlier described as ‘Sorrow of Bengal’ and tamed both by embankment and dam/reservoir continues to imperil its lower catchment by recurrent floods.

The Dynamic Ganga,eastward flow of the Ganga, and consequently many distributaries have decayed. The erosion of the bank, especially in Malda district of West Bengal, has been accelerated after the commissioning of the Farakka barrage.
