About 90% of the world’s rice is grown and consumed in Asia, where it contributes about 50% of dietary energy (Juliano 1985). Rice is also a staple food in Latin America, parts of Africa, and the Middle East.

This is the primary reason why heterosis in rice has not been utilized in commercial production. To solve this problem, the most effective way, as proved by other self-pollinated crops, is to exploit the phenomenon of cytoplasmic male sterility.

Moreover, endosperm-derived plants would generate somaclonal variation and will add to the genetic variability in this important cereal crop (Bajaj and Bidani 1986).

Also, by virtue of a presumptive single cell origin, the possibility of chimeric regenerants is reduced and the potential for obtaining identical, genetically engineered plants from manipulated cells or protoplasts can be realized.
