Lake Sediments: Sources or Sinks of Industrially Mobilized Elements?ore optimistic view. The optimism has been prompted by several clear indications that the recent period of declining smelter emissions has resulted in both biological (Gunn and Keller 1990; Keller et al. 1992a) and chemical (Keller et al. 1992b) improvements in local lakes.

Liming of Sudbury Lakes: Lessons for Recovery of Aquatic Biota from Acidification et al. 1989). In the 1980s, there were about 19,000 lakes in Ontario with a pH less than 6 (Neary et al. 1990). Roughly one-third of these lakes are near Sudbury. They were acidified by long-term emissions of sulfur dioxide from local smelters (see Chapter 3).

Natural Recovery of Vascular Plant Communities on the Industrial Barrens of the Sudbury Areaion did not begin until at least 10 years after the initiation of atmospheric improvement. The foreground of Figure 7.2 shows a site close to the Coniston smelter, photographed at 19-year intervals, in which the only change has been minimal colonization by tickle grass (.), tufted hairgrass (.), and sorrel (.).

Dynamics of Plant Communities and Soils in Revegetated Ecosystems: A Sudbury Case Studye would lead to establishment of woody plants such as white birch (.),trembling aspen (.), and willows (. spp.) (Fig. 13.1). Because this “minimal amelioration” (Skaller 1981) appeared to initiate spontaneous colonization by metal-intolerant plants from a local seed source, it was referred to as a “trigger factor” (Winterhalder 1983).
