Freshwater Ecology,in complex and diverse ways both with each other and with the geochemical cycles discussed previously. Some biota, such as algae, bacteria and viruses, may affect the water quality directly causing a health hazard; others may simply be a prerequisite for the successful functioning of the ecosystem.

Water Quality, Treatment, Conservation and Re-use,nt are all relevant in determining the quality of the water that will be abstracted for use. Seldom is this stored water immediately suitable for domestic use, and some treatment (usually chemical and biological) will be necessary. This may be as part of the reservoir installation or many kilometres away at a separate plant.

Flood Routing through Reservoirs,The prime objective of a reservoir is to collect and store water that is in excess of immediate requirements and then to make it available when there is a shortage. This shortage may occur in the vicinity of the reservoir or in another area of the country, reflecting the differing amounts of rainfall experienced by different regions.

Reservoir Size,he centre of demand. This may itself eliminate the possibility of either an upland or a lowland reservoir. The necessary reservoir size is calculated by extrapolation of the available data on water demands, population growth, etc.

Management of Reservoirs,nt the location of demand, pumping costs and the level of water in each reservoir. Automation, both in data collection and in control, is being introduced to help in running many of the newer and/or larger supply networks.
