描述The Annual Beltsville Symposium serves as a forum for presenting recent developments in basic research that contribute solutions to agricultural problems. The eleventh in this series focuses on instrumentation tech- niques which provide powerful new research tools. These tools will provide information that can lead to a better understanding of biological and physical processes critical to the solution of today‘s agricultural problems. The tools discussed include isotope technology, separation techniques, microscopy, electro-magnetic spectroscopy, resonance and mass spectrometry and microcomputers. This Symposium brought together scientists who are at the forefront of the development of many of these tools and those who are applying them to problems directly related to agricultural research. Electron probe x-ray microanalysis and digital elemental x-ray imaging and their application to biom drug cisplatin, Ca and Al distributions in human pathological brain tissue, and Mg quantitation of individual peripheral blood mononuclear cells will demonstrate biomedical applications of these methods.

Satellite instrumentation for monitoring agricultural conditionsiewing satellites will force greater attention to cost recovery and providing those data users require. Rapid transmission of satellite data to individual farmers and county agents is now technically possible, but cost and utility considerations suggest that this will not occur in the near term.

Recent developments in mass spectrometrybe aware of its attendant complications, is still the most powerful of all. It allows use of labelled reagents and separation from byproducts and impurities by GC and LC. Quite often the elucidation of molecular weight and other structural features is then straightforward.
