Studies of Synoptic and Mesoscale Atmospheric Features from Satellites and mesoscale convective complexes - as well as providing a unique source of their ‘climatology’. AVHRR images have formed the basis of a method to estimate ocean to air heat fluxes during cold air outbreaks, and severe thunderstorms can be analysed and predicted by using rapid scan images.

Cloud Formations Seen by Satelliteting or discovery by weather chart analysis. These formations are of fundamental importance because they represent many of the meso-scale mechanisms. The most obvious formations are described together with a section on the use of a satellite archive for climatological purposes.

Sensors to Record Atmospheric and Terrestrial Information: Principles of Collection and Analysisg of atmospheric and terrestrial features will be considered. We shall consider both scanning and staring sensing devices. The main thrust of the presentation will be to discuss the different experimental and operational systems which have been deployed to collect optimal data for selected purposes.
