The Sphere of Privilege: Confucian Culture and the Administration of Buddhism (and Religion) in Chimechanisms of the state, which posited a “sphere of privilege” rather than a “public sphere.” The success of Buddhism in China was measured by its ability to access the “sphere of privilege” determined by Confucian values and principles, as applied through the bureaucratic structure of the Chinese state.
