These permit precisely defined dosing in controlled environments, which is not possible in most . studies, and are relatively quick and inexpensive to carry out. It is in mechanistic studies that cell and tissue culture can be of most value.

Cytotoxic Brain Oedema as a Model in the Examination of Cerebroprotective Substancesd potassium content of the brain, the histology of the cerebellum and the motor behaviour. With special respect to the question of suitability as a model for testing of cerebroprotective substances, the oedema reducing effect of substances used to manage brain oedema or of potential therapeutic value was tested.

The Glutathione System in Rat Liver Chronically Injured by Thioacetamide). This fact is important for supplying extrahepatic tissues with GSH or cysteine (Bannai and Tataishi 1986). Recently, Burgunder and Lauterburg (1987) demonstrated that liver cirrhosis in man is associated with decreased GSH plasma levels. The authors concluded from these data that GSH synthesis in cirrhotic liver is decreased.
