Perceiving the TextReading a text involves the perception of letters on a screen or a page, or some other perceptive pathway. But it does not usually consist of thematizing the letters, as might happen in proofreading. This chapter investigates various types of perception which an engagement with writing can involve, concentrating on visual perception.

The Temporal Plot of Understanding the Text shows that passive synthesis does not insulate the temporality of the text from that the reader. It also clarifies some experiences of lyrical poetry. The concluding sections examine memorization, forgetting and a reader’s ‘systematic’ exploration of their motivating associations, e.g., for academic purposes.
