Lightning Investigation with Radaradar beam above the most vertically developed region of thunderstorms in order to avoid strong backscattering signal from precipitation that masks the lightning echoes. The first photographs of lightning echoes were made in 1949, using a 10-cm wavelength radar at MIT (Ligda, 1950).

Weather Radar in the United States Army’s Fort Monmouth Laboratoriestive weather radar research and development at the Army’s laboratories located near Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. This chapter traces the initiation of that work, the major radar equipments developed, and associated research which had its origins in the radar weather program.

Advances in Precipitation Physics Following the Advent of Weather Radarar sets installed in or near their weather offices. Some were electrical engineers involved with the design and testing of radar sets for military use. Others were physical scientists and engineers of miscellaneous backgrounds.
