描述Application of recent advances, such as non-equilibriumthermodynamics, the maintenance concept and the material balancingmethod, to the description, of microbial growth has suggested newexperimental approaches which have yielded a wealth of data. Thesedata have been used to develop mathematical models of microbial growthand metabolism, and the models have made it possible to direct themetabolism of a microorganism in such a way that more of a certaindesired product is made. .While a full quantitative description of all aspects of microbialgrowth and metabolism is till remote, the new approaches are openingup large areas of new potential -- it is now possible, for instance,to deal with individual cells in a population and with quantitativeaspects of product formation and optimisation. Microbiologists,biochemists and physiologists will find this an invaluable update on afield of great promise. .

Application of a metabolic balancing technique to the analysis of microbial fermentation data,y fitting model equations to experimental data. Further, phenomenological relations concerning kinetics of product formation and limiting enzyme activities are assessed. The results are compared with the conclusions of the original articles, and differences due to the application of improved models are discussed.
