Element Abundances at High Redshifts: The N/O Ratio at Low Metallicity α systems offer a new approach for tracking the evolution of normal galaxies from early epochs to the present day. Here we report the first measurements of nitrogen abundances in galaxies with less than 1/100 of solar metallicity, a range unexplored by previous observations.

Are Studies of Dust in Damped Lyman-, Systems Biased by Extinction ?We discuss whether the low dust to gas ratio and the absence of molecules in damped Ly. absorbers is a true characteristic of the latter or rather the result of a selection effect induced by dust extinction.

The Chemical Evolution of Damped Lyman α GalaxiesMeasurements of element abundances in damped Lyman α systems are providing new means to investigate the chemical evolution of galaxies, particularly at early times. We review progress in this area, concentrating on recent efforts to extend the range of existing surveys to both higher and lower redshifts.
