描述 | Achievements today in plant biotechnology have alreadysurpassed all previous expectations. Plant biotechnology, integratedwith classical breeding, is now on the verge of creating the`evergreen revolution‘ to solve the world‘s envisaged tripled demandfor food, agricultural commodities and natural products. Newbiotechnologies are being continuously adapted to agriculturalpractices, opening new vistas for plant utilization. Plantbiotechnology is changing the plant scene in three major areas: (1)growth and development control (vegetative, generative andpropagation), (2) protecting plants against the ever-increasingthreats of abiotic and biotic stress, (3) expanding the horizons byproducing specialty foods, biochemicals and pharmaceuticals. Thepotential for improving plant and animal productivity and their properuse in agriculture relies largely on newly-developed DNA biotechnologyand molecular markers. These techniques enable the selection ofsuccessful genotypes, better isolation and cloning of favorabletraits, and the creating of transgenic organisms of importance toagriculture. .These areas were extensively discussed at the 9th internationalcongress of the International Association o |
