Entropy Production in Inhomogeneous Thermal Environments,ironment and the associated irreversible work are crucial for the resulting efficiency and power output of the engine. So far we did not investigate possible temperature gradients which influence entropy production severely.

Conclusions and Outlook,cols for a Brownian particle in a harmonic trapping potential to the case of an optical cavity trap setup in which the temperature difference between the two heat baths is created by optical damping. Furthermore we showed that in the underdamped limit the optimal protocols derived in the overdamped approximation fail.

Experimental Setups in Overdamped and Underdamped Regimes,lized by Blickle and Bechinger [23] in 2012. They thereby proved that micromechanical machines that convert thermal to mechanical energy are not merely a theoretical playground, but provide a feasible design for future applications.
