Atmospheric Pressure and Temperature Profiling Using Near IR Differential Absorption Lidardetermination. Oxygen is used for these measurements since it is uniformly mixed in the atmosphere, which greatly simplifies the measurement approach, and has lines with appropriate strength and energy levels. Also, it is located in a spectral region (760 nm) easily accessible using tunable solid state and dye lasers and efficient detectors.

Detection of Trace Gases Using High-Resolution IR Spectroscopy spatial contrast must be distinguishable from background clutter. The contrast can be measured by simply subtracting the signals measured in different pixels, or by the Background Optical Suppression Scheme (BOSS) described in Part II.
